.CALGARY ZOO.

The Calgary zoo does lots of researching in other zoos and in the wild to find solutions for environmental problems that threaten animals around the world. They have a program where they take cell phones and reuse a special ore that is inside them. This decreases the amount of mining and destruction in natural habitats of animals in the area. They also do "species reintroduction" to help endangered animals have a better chance at survival.
Red pandas are under the "Species Survival Plan" which manages and conserves all sorts of species. The species they ususally use are "flag-species" which attract the attention of the puplic, such as the adorable red panda.

.HUMAN IMPACT.

Human impact on red pandas is bad. Humans poach red pandas for their shiny pelts. The pelts can be sold for up to $150 per pelt and so their demanded quite often.
Humans also take red pandas habitats. When we expand our territory, theirs declines. They will either run out of land or be forced to adapt.

.DEFINITIONS.

EXTIRPATED: destroyed
ENDANGERED: threatened with extiction
THREATENED: to be in danger
SPECIAL CONCERNS: to be in possible danger

Red pandas are endangered because of poaching, inbreeding depression and habitat loss. But there is hope because they are protected by law and zoos have been breeding and releasing.

.NICHE.

Red pandas live in forests in the Himalayas which is from Nepal to China. They mainly eat bamboo but have been known to eat bird eggs, insects, and small mammels. When they want a drink, they dip their paw into the water then lick their paw to get the water.
Red pandas are usually solitery animals but will travel in small groups, especially around when the females give birth.
Unfortunaly, red pandas do little more then eat and sleep due to their low calarie diet.

.ADAPTATIONS.

Red pandas have very thick fur on the soles of their paws. It is believed this is for thermal insulation. Another is the colouring of their fur and tails. The red and brown fur and ringed tail provide excellent camofloge against the lichen on the trees where they live.
The extra fur on their feet keep them cool in the summer and warm in the winter and the camofloge increases their chances of catching prey.
A behavioral adaptation is that the red panda is usually active during dusk and dawn. The lighting at this time probably increases the red pandas camofloge.
